Ahh no pics yet.
But...
She's tuned up. I forgot how much you can crank up and not choke these thick shelled drums. Me like.
I could not get the "over dry sound" out of it until I took off the 20 strand Pure Sounds and put the Sonor 24 strand on. Much much better. Don't know much about pure sound (Greg has looked into them I know) but this one is gold color. And really softens/fattens up a drum, more than I liked. Drum sounds fat enough and now has plenty of crack and body.
When I get the time I am going to take it apart and try to buff some of the shine out of it. Just for tickles. It looks great on the kit, the shine would be the slight difference.
Need some more nights with it but I think I'm going to fall in love with this drum rapidly.
And....I love that it is not a Sonor.

First, I'm glad you are liking it. Great catch!

Second, buffing doesn't get rid of shine, but increases it under almost any circumstance I can think of. However, the quickest shine remover will be some paint thinner, but be careful because it will remove the oil finish as well. So very quick with the cloth just damp. Then use lemon oil, and you know that drill. Of course, if you don't do anything but handle it a lot, the gloss will disappear by itself.

Or, just ignore the entire issue.

Third, I really haven't "looked into" Puresound any further than to pull mine off. I think all of them are gold color, so that doesn't tell much. Wire types (brass, bronze or steel) and different gauges are the issue, but oddly none of that info is on the wires.

What's that about? Too much of one thing? Or guilt by association?

Greg,
I knew you would say that about buffing....but what about using 0000 steel wool.
It's really not critical...it would be a spare time thing...which I have very little of as of late.

I was also surprised it says nothing on the pure sound wires. It only appears to me they are much softer than the Sonor Steel 24 which I stole off another snare. I am going to put the Pure Sound on the other drum which is thin shelled and see what it does for that drum.

Loving that it is not Sonor can be a long long post. I'll spare you.
Hint: I don't think they are doing any better than a few others right now but still manage to retain the rolls royce pricing.
This same snare makeup in Sonor would have cost me out the nose. Well...any Sonor snare.
It used to be a whole different world when they where glaringly different. Designer back.
After 30 years I'm really ready to try some different voices. A different snare is a good place to start.
Right before I grabbed this one I was ready to pull the trigger on one of Mapex's Panther snares. The selection is incredible and the reviews are fantastic.
One of these days I'll measure the shell and post it. It's a Maple HEAVY.

I can actually chime in, here. I have a Mapex Black Panther cherry wood 6.5" that is absolutely fantastic. Visually, its one of the most beautiful snares I've ever seen: gorgeous wood, gold plated hardware and diecasts, old style badge, almost distractingly pretty. Sonically, I am wowed every single time I play it. I've tried to talk myself into parting with it, as the collection has grown over the past few months, but I can't do it, no matter how hard I try. When I factor in how little I paid for it, I'm just stunned at the sheer value of the whole package. I can tell you, from my experience, the Panther snares are ridiculously underrated.

You just made my week, Kelly! You raving about a maple heavy shell?! Priceless. Absolutely priceless...

.

Oil finishes are a little complicated... not sure if the steel filings would not get caught. Probably should check out some reading on that. I've used them but can't remember how, or what the final step entailed.

No question. Sonor once built drums and then priced them according to the cost of build. Now they are building drums to a price, cutting corners where they can be cut, and charging more for the pleasure - oh, did I say that they're now custom?

Classix, if thin birch works, are a solid deal, but if one must have chromed lollipop bumpers...

I believe it was Cliff who caused some sleepless nights at NAMM by suggesting SQ is for those who missed Designers.

Im just gonna go ahead and try it one day. The worst that can happen is I buff it down to a normal size Heavy shell rotflmao.

Croyd....oddly....the thing weighs nothing. Which also comes out in the sound of it. It doesn't sound constipated or just hugely fat.
Like I said...I need more time with it.
One thing for sure....the snare adjuster is by far one of the nicest I have ever seen on a drum. Incredibly fine tuning, it's limitless, incredibly smooth and the lever spins so you can rest it in any position you wish. Looks and acts like a hi tech aircraft part.
