I'll be darned. Think those were stock, or did the dealer do that?

The black hoops from that vintage drum only ever looked good when brand new. Not that it is hard to get out the magic marker and touch 'em up, but every time I look at an old drum, the black hoops add a brief note of discouragement. 8-)

Are any drums still made that way? (Only an insulated Sonor owner could ask a question like that.)

Koa would be better, since I seem to have lost track of the last sheet of that wrap that I had a lead on, but it might still be worth picking this up, so that I have one out of two hurdles cleared.

You're very welcome. I thought you might be interested in a orphan of any sort, given the asking price for a kit like this one! Is someone dreaming of retirement, or is that a likely sales point? I seem to remember these guys being a little proud of their merchandise.

It seems that these shells go for stupid money, regardeless of wrap, etc., so long as the shell is good, and the hardware is original and intact.

This shell ended up going for $431! :shock:

More than I wanted to spend (right now) for a project I am not sure I can complete. The koa wrap would be nearly impossible to find.

With stained wrap and missing lower hoop and rods. I wouldn't have believed it.

These shells were unique to Rogers. I do believe Keller made them, but the shell layup was 5-ply Maple-Poplar-Maple-Poplar-Maple with 5-ply rings and usually a sharper edge cut. Different from Ludwig and Slingerland's classic Poplar core with Maple or Mahogany outside plys and a rounded edge or Gretsch's Maple/Gum /Maple layup with the roundover edges. No shells are really made in that Pre-1979 Rogers way anymore. Keller makes a version of the classic Ludwig/Slingerland shell, though. If those shells were cut with a sharper 45 and the interiors painted w grey granitone, it would be close to the Rogers sound.
