Geez look at those shells. Very nice.

Thanks, Kel. Pretty, aint they? Something in the photography accentuates the red, so they're bit less yahoo orange, a little more sober.

The finish looks raw to me yet. This is about 6 coats of 2 pound cut (as its known, that designates shellac flake to alcohol ratio). Of course when you are padding the finish on, you don't actually coat everything, so maybe 3 coats actually.

They will get about two more sessions and then a knock down with 400 grit, followed by a 1 pound cut (twice the alcohol) for a few more coats to hide the 400 grit sanding scratches.

Then a knock down with 0000 steel wool, and coated with a dark furniture wax. Shellac is the only finish I'm aware of that looks like there's no finish on the wood but still has a deep luster. Lovely stuff. Thank you bugs.

Man, wouldn't that just be great! Do you like a good cigar? :D or reasonably good Scotch? :D :D :D It is difficult to pad shellac on a cylinder. The secret of padding shellac is never stopping and never lifting the pad off the surface. I am learning to walk the shell with the fingers of my left hand while padding with my right. Yikes! :o

Wait!! There's an offer of cigars and scotch on the table? That sounds much better than work to me!

Thanks, Nick. I'm a little slowed by need to do other things, and by the weather which has gone cold again. But that's okay, I get to sand a little each day, and by Monday, when the sun comes back out and it becomes seasonably warm, I'll have the shells ready for the last few coats.

The only problem is that I have too much time to think about what could go wrong.
