I love playing 1 up, 2 down now for louder gigs. I was never really comfortable with 2 toms over the BD, so I played a 4-piece for years. But I really love having the two big drums on the floor for all sorts of low-end fun.

Man it's the latest fad. Has to be because drums got so freaking expensive.
I hope I never find myself with that setup.

Likewise, David.

I abandoned the second rack tom and slotted a ride in there 25- 30 years ago, and never looked back.

Eventually, a second floor tom, then an 8" tucked in. See top left of page.

Conceptually, in terms of both ergonomics and pitches, I still see it as a four piece kit with an extra high and an extra low.

Yes, same with me. It was primarily because I could never get the 12" tom to sit in a spot that was comfortable under the ride to where I could hit it without getting the ride in the same stroke half the time. If I play 2-up I do move both toms over to the left so I can play them comfortably without spazzing out with the cymbals. But like Kelly, 12" toms have not always sounded good to me, so I never missed them all that much. But I have to say the 12" tom on my Yamaha Beech Custom kit is awesome (as are all the other toms on that kit), so I really enjoy the full set-up with that kit (10, 12, 14, 15). But sometimes I feel like I get too consumed with which drums to hit on that kit instead of just making music!!

I did buy a cheap 11" Tama Granstar orphan tom 'cause I really wanted to try that size, but I haven't gotten around to getting a new head for it yet.

I don't know how the 12/13 rack become a thing, but I know I thought it would be cool when I brought it home as part of the consist of a Rogers Londoner setup. :?

And, I left it set up that way until I sold the kit ten years later.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. There's just something really wrong for me with that.

Pros:

      Looks cool
      More sounds
      Compact setup

Cons:
      Looks dumb
      Too many sounds
Ride is somewhere way off over the moon

I try often moving two rack toms to the left so I can better get at the ride.
I play and think "much better".
Then I get up and look back and my eyes hurt.
It does seem to work better visually with smaller toms, an 8 and 10.

For looks, I prefer simplicity at the top, a bit more complication at the bottom. So one rack out front. I can put up with an 8 to the left because it's unobtrusive, and it plays the same way (unobtrusively). I've never hit an 8 and wished I'd hit the 12 that's right in front of me.

But after listening to jazz players, I've been trying to produce more sounds with less drums, in part because I am tired of packing more stands around, in part because our recording capability could not easily handle the extra drum.

As of yesterday, I have my ride over the floor toms. Not the best place to play it.
But I can't part with my right side hihat and wanted to try bringing a crash over to the left.
It's all because I'm playing by myself and using a ride less.
Playing with a band I would have to tighten up and make the ride more accessible.

Man, that reminds me. I used to play with my ride about midway between the two floors. Crashes occupied the more central position. Can't remember the reason. I can hardly remember the layout. Must have had a lot of space to the right of the rack.

Late 70's, early 80's it was against the law to put it anywhere else.

I forgot about that. DId it come with a non-removable tag?
