I'm so sorry this has taken so long for me to upload these for you guys! I forgot where the photo's were.
Anyway here we go at last. First picture is the photo the guys took of the kit in the shop. Notice the kick hoops had been painted a horrible grey colour! I still to this day don't have a clue why it was done. Also notice the 10" tom is a later addition to the kit and is a far brighter and more vivid purple colour. The kick hoops are like this too as they have been shielded from light for so long having been painted. I spent hours in my bath rubbing the hoops down and then relacquering them over the Xmas holidays a few years ago. Sure was worth it though!

Hey Ron,

I do vaguely recall seeing these, on the museum, I think.

I wonder if maybe the kick hoops were not original, and someone just slopped something onto the maple to make them not stick out like sore thumbs.

You have some nice kits!

Hi Cliff,

Yes I posted these on the museum I'm sure. I was confused when folks were saying they had not seen them actually!
Anyway there you go! I agree on the hoops subject. Maybe they were an afterthought along with the 10" tom. My dream designer kit is the walnut finish but I have only seen one of them in Scotland and that was a very long time ago. I'll never forget how they made me feel and I was a guitarist at the time! Something special about the designer series for sure.

Thanks for the kind comment on my kits I love them all!
My friends spend all their money on girlfriends and cars and at the end of the day when the car gets taken off the road and the relationship ends have nothing to show for all that hard earned cash. I put most of mine into drums and have a pretty special little collection coming along that I am very proud of. People ask me how I afford it all but they don't seem to realise it has been years in the making.
I am very lucky indeed :D
(Especially to have a partner like Bernadette that allows this habit! )

Thanks Goki! I really appreciate your kind words. :D

The finish is called birdseye purple. Certainly not my first choice in finish but VERY rare. I have never seen another kit in this finish. Maybe you guys in the USA have seen it more often? Would love an 8" tom and another kick! Still holding out for a set in walnut though........I dream of that kit!!!!

Beauties, Ron! To my eyes that are rather more warm grey than purple, but whatever the color it makes for a very handsome kit.

Your 12 is newer than mine, so you don't have the tunesafe interference problems I did. Looking at your photos, I realize that your 12 is quite close to the kick. If you lift it higher, do you get more resonance from the 12? Just asking, because a surface in too close proximity to the reso will stifle a drum.

Fantastic kit, and thanks for taking the time to post it. Yes, there is something special about Designers.

Looking at this again, I think I misunderstood what Ron was saying.

If I got it right now, the hoops were originally birdseye purple outside / plain maple inside...

...then, someone painted over the birsdeye purple with the ugly !@#$.

Ron, do I now have it right that you stripped the 'ugly' down to the underlying birdseye purple, and re-applied a clear coat?

Apologize for being a little slow. Nicely done.
;)
