Clear coating.
All cleaned, touched up and mounted. After the touch up I almost quit there they looked so good.

Dayum! What are you doing, Kel? I love the hardware holding the shell! Made me laugh with felts and all. For a moment I thought I saw the bicycle driven sprocket and chain for Kate to keep the shells spinning à la factory. I thought the action was on an 8ø. And as you have not broken down the rest of the kit… is this a new purchase, or did it just need help? In any case:

Welp. The problem I am having is after 5 coats it's just not going on thick enough "looking". At this rate I'll be spraying til I'm 80 (which actually is not too far off). So after some research, I see there is "grain filler" to use before clear coat. And you can color it in a myriad of ways. My first thought was color it black but I think there are some many "valleys" in this mohogany that it would do too much accenting. Calling Greg PS. This is an experimental drum. |

You are spraying what? For open pore finishes, you don't want to seal the pores… unless you do. Are the original finishes closed pore? It's been so long since I owned Phonics, but Sigs are all open unless glossy. |

| My fave, Phonic Plus Mahogany Veneer. What ya got, Kel. Looks like 8,10,12,14,16ft and 2x 20x17's with matching 518x. I have a 20x17 Mahogany veneer, HUGE for a 20.  Very happy to see you back with 80's Sonors', Kel. Awesome  PS/ You don't have one of those "Useless" 24x18 Mahogany veneered Phonic you don't need, do you?  Seriously Congrats,

Jeff! I'm looking for a matching 8 x 8. Please find me one. I'll be your best friend for life I have 10,12, 14, 15, 15ft (Daivid is holding a 13 and 16ft for me). I will end up not using the 14 and 15 hang toms. Yes they are 20's. And you are not kidding, they are BIG 20's. Love them. Very happy and relieved to know someone knows what they are talking about. Every single 20 Phonic Plus kick I have seen for sale is listed "20 x 18". These things annoy the heck out of me. How could you not know what depth your drums are?! Thanks for listing it correctly. But I expected no less from you. David (Phatsolid) had the 24 kick. Maybe he could track it down and inquire if they would like to sell. In the mean time I will keep my eye out for you. Actually, I can't help but look for them...everyday...day in day out. Greg, from all that I have read, there are 3 or 4 woods that are in the list for being "open pore". Mahogany is always in the list. Yeah I might abort. Thinking it over. Clear coat on open poor wood doesn't look good so I would have to go some other route. On those high gloss Sigs they must have filled the pores. It looks fairly easy to do. |

Clear coat looks great as an open pore finish, as long as the finish is not glossy. An open pore gloss finish looks like a dog's breakfast. If you are using shellac (my choice) or lacquer, the trick is to use very little - like Sonor did - and when the solvents flash off, the wood is sealed but there is little finish thickness. That leaves a surface that is sort of semigloss and looks like wood. But, if you have too much gloss when done, you can rub it out, like here: http://www.woodworkersjournal.com/Main/ ... -5261.aspx I cannot recommend rubbing out urethane in the way the author specified, but nitrocellulose lacquer or shellac, or an organic varnish or an "oil" finish all rub out beautifully. |

Kelly, As I recall the guy who bought the 24" kick drove down from Canada (Montreal?) to pick it up as he was in the area. I'll see if I can dig out his info... he was a Sonor Forum guy I believe. - D. |
