A sound clip previously posted on the Sonormuseum, for comparison to the Signature clip posted here.

Sizes are:

Floor tom – 16x16
Floor tom – 14x14
Tom – 12x10
Tom - 8x8
Designer 14x8 maple light snare

Here is what they sound like.

Click here for comparison to Signatures.

Pretty hard to pick a favorite. Both sound great. I like the large Signature floors, which have an interesting character not present in the Designers.

The fact that they are close miked makes sound between kits very similar. Signatures are more likely to benefit from such a recording arrangement because they are more about head sound and less about shell, whereas the Designer lights are going to involve shell more, which won't be picked up.

Yes/no?

I would have a hard time choosing a favorite based solely on recorded comparison, but from live, ambient sound, it would unquestionably be the Designers.

That would seem to confirm the notion that the Signatures do benefit more from close mic recording, and also seems to confirm my long held belief that close-mic recording is what Signatures were designed to do.

If tuned properly, Signatures would seem to be a real recording engineer's dream.

To tell you the truth, I am so pleased with the Signatures recorded sound, that this may just free up the Designers for more use out of the studio.
;)

Your designer sounds are what led me to try them out, they sound so good.

I'm not going to listen to the sig clips in case that starts something bad in my brain as well....
I think we can just all try to chase Cliffs drum sounds for the next ten years and still not make it, unless drum dials get involved

Aw, go on and listen. ;)

Interested in hearing your observations on recorded sound of one vs. the other.

Drumdials are not necessary; they are expedient and expeditious. 8-)

I love big drums cranked, they sound great.
It's also nice to hear a good comparison between beech and maple, for people like me who have forgotten what beech sounds like.
It is so freakin heavy though! Definitely a great studio kit and sound for you though Cliff. I think the designers are a little more my sound these days though.
Thanks again for posting both!

Hey Tim,

I agree 100% - Designers are the weapon of choice for me, any time.

I was pleasantly surprised at the recorded Signature sound, though.

After playing the Designers the other night, I am finding it hard to work up enthusiasm for any other kit I've ever played.

Did I say I am happy with them? :D :D :D
