Here's another soundclip of my Birch SQ2's. As per request from Gregory and Clifford, I played softly in some parts. This made my drums have some tone and resonance. When I hit hem hard, they became very bright with lots of attack. The Heavy Birch SQ 2 is very dynamic IMO. I set the EQ's flat so you can hear the real Sonor sound.
I tuned the Snare higher (Sorry Cliff).

Sounds great, Greg. Through my sound card with headphones, I'm missing something in the lowest floor; I'll have to download it and play it through my stereo to catch the full effect.

Hey, Greg. Listened carefully to the recording.

I remember you posted an earlier file (the one on the old board where you first used Cliff's tuning). I haven't gone back to listen, but in my memory at all the drums sounded vibrant and worked with each other. In my mind (at least) the current tuning is not as vibrant. Some of the drums have a bit of drop, so the heads must be dissimilarly tuned, and the lowest tom is almost silent. Is it possible that you have been playing that same set of heads long enough to have stretched them out? Could it be that they just need a mild tweak or two, or perhaps the heads could use replacement?

Great sounding drums, and I like the effect of the gentler stroke. Sure doesn't sound particularly quiet, does it! :)

My SClassix has a similar attack and decay in a cooler (temperature wise ;) ) environment. They tend to loose a little body and fullness, I put it down to the heads not liking the colder temperatures. You don't notice it at all when the whole band is playing.

Hey Greg,

I am convinced that each of us has a snare sound in his head, and despite various experiments in between, we gravitate back to it, and it usually sounds right for each of us, respectively. It isn't the sound for me, but I like the acrylic snare.

I am thinking along the same lines as (the other) Greg. I am curious as to what the DD readings on the top heads are now? On my Designer 16" floor tom, there is a fine line between the 70.5 I need for a C, and the point at which it no longer resonates.

Greg (SSF) and I have had this conversation before, and we agree that there is no 'right way'...

....but you gotta love the idea that Greg's sound stage sounds like you are sitting in front of a left-handed kit. ;) :lol:

Thanks all for your kind words. The heads are about 1 year old, and need to be changed. I think that's tha issue.

Very funny comment about my panning techniques. :) When I listen to your recordings, I have to turn my headphones around to listen from a drummers perspective. :lol:

UPDATE: My DD settings are way off, all of my toms are out of tune. The bottom heads are fine, the top heads are way below my original DD settings. I blame that on stetched out drumheads that can't stay in tune. New Remo Ambassadors are being ordered. Thanks Gregory and Cliff for your great ears.

Cool.

Boiling a frog by gradually raising the heat comes to mind. Both it and de-tuning happen so gradually that you don't notice until it has gone too far.

I see that you are going back to Remo. What are your thoughts on Remo/Evans after your brief test with Evans?

p.s. I hear you on the panning issue. Funny what you get used to. My headphones are panned from drummer's perspective (from the mixer) while playing, and from audience perspective (from the DAW) on playback.
