On drums...

I'm not quite as happy about this video as about the previous one, but I do like the song. One thing that I have been paying attention to: my right hand is stroking every every hit, unlike the way in which I think that I play, which is right hand coming down on the beat and rising the rest of the time. I've wondered why I'm seeing this. There are two possible reasons and perhaps the two are conjoined:

The flat ride requires a strong hit to make it explode, and it is possible that I have developed a habit of making all strokes the same, when playing straight time rather than swing, as a result. Not sure why that has transferred to the hat.
In this particular song, the snare hit comes both on the down and up beats, and perhaps I am locking my right hand to keep from becoming confused by my left. A simple bit of practice eradicated that bit of laziness.

With regards to the "stroking", if I understand your comments correctly, I'm thinking it may be a somewhat conscious reaction to the even 8ths/16ths? played by the guitar player, or just your intention of keeping a very even ride sound with each stroke as opposed to a more pulsated ride sound where the downbeats might have more emphasis than the upbeats.

I agree about the intention of even strokes, but I think I can do that without the doubled up effort. Right now, my wrist is sore from taking a fall, so I've lost some flexibility and can't check it out. Video is a great tool for examining your technique!

Let the good drums roll!!!

The two vids were done at the same time, which is why they are the same in place and concept. This one, Big Old Sky, was done first, and we were still trying to get comfortable with cameras in the room, and I don't thinkit works quite as smoothly as Trouble, where we were more relaxed... and so were the camera people, apparently. Making these was an interesting exercise!
