Yeah I guess bro. Not something I could do anymore, but I remember doing it. I feel your pain.

Wow! I guess people in Europe still party late! The music in most clubs in Boston has to stop by 1am and everyone needs to be kicked out and doors closed at 2am. Of course, they just started selling booze up here on Sundays this decade, and mostly because you could just drive into NH or RI and buy it! A weird mix of socially liberal AND religiously conservative laws up here for sure.

BTW I still practice shuffles all the time. I don't play much blues anymore, but I played in blues-based bands for decades. I still find shuffles one of the hardest grooves to play well. Many can fake their was through them but most drummers don't play great shuffles. And they are HARD to play well!

Great to hear from you Goki,

- David

Normal clubs close at 01a.m.
Night clubs close at 04a.m.

But, from january 15th till february 15th, the work hours for the night clubs is 05a.m.
The students have their winter break... ;)

I'm now down to 2 gigs a week - Thursday and Saturday.

David - blues shuffle is extraordinary.
I don't play it "by the book", as one should.... :(
I play it by feel.....

The reason for this is that I've found that in clubs where you need to play louder:
1) blues is more widely accepted if it's not Chicago style but rather something more similar to Texas style shuffle.
2) ghost notes on the snare (all that swaying motion) is almost unrecognizable in a club environment (we mic only the bass drum and one overhead), so a straight flow on the snare is more desirable......

The shuffle is a wonderful thing, as well as the swing.....

I don't know anything about these things, shuffle or blues. I just try to play what the other guys are playing. I surely have noticed the difference in feel but could not tell you how to produce it. The vid of the Thunderbirds is fairly cool but I'd have a hard time playing in a band whose focus was that. Admirably played for what it is, that band is tight as can be.

Although the ghost notes won't always be heard (depending on the live situation), sometimes it seems that they are so important to the feel!

This is one of my all-time favorite shuffle grooves. So loose and swinging. Scott A. was around Berklee in the mid-late '80s when I was. He's a monster player, always plays for the music, never seems to overplay:

You can definitely hear the ghost notes way better on the studio version:
