Apparently this week is 'drum solo' week on the Letterman show.

I'll probably sleep through the Neil Peart night, but I'll definitely be watching Roy Haynes on Wednesday night, 6/8/11.

The man is 86 years old and still an extremely vital player, based on some very recent concert video I have seen.

Check it out, if you get the chance.

I saw Roy play in Boston about 2 years ago and he was stiill kicking the ass of his bandmates who were all in their 20s and 30s. He is a national treasure for sure!

It's bad enough trying to understand the mindset of a jazz drummer. But how many times do I have to watch a guy in complete mystery about what he is doing to produce that particular sound, only to discover that the tracking is a fraction of a second off so, in fact, what I am seeing isn't!

That must have been a treat. ;)

I have yet to see him, but I keep my eyes open for a chance.

Man, seeing that clip refreshes my regret at not having bought a 20" K ride back in 1994 when I bought a set of K's that I still have (10" splash, 16" medium crash, 18" medium thin crash, 20" ride, 14" hats). A flat ride was not even in my thinking at the time. :(

This clip was from 1996, only a couple of years after I bought mine, but I'll bet I would have liked an 18" or a 20" from this same era, like the one Roy Haynes is using here. Zildjian offers one now, but K's are different now than they were then.

I tried both a 20"K flat and a 20" K Constantinople flat back in November 2010 (on my way to Kelly's), and neither one really wanted to go home with me. Don't know if I was just spoiled by the Diril I had just gotten before hitting the road.

Goki has an 18" K Custom flat that I bought in 2001, and sometimes still miss, but I'm glad that he has it. ;)

He's very glad too, Cliff... ;)

There's something extra tasty about Flat rides. Sure, You don't have the bell and You're limited to sound options (and music styles), BUT the way it swings - is a step ahead of ordinary rides...

Great video Greg - thanks for sharing...

Awesome clip! I agree about the flat ride as well, they are great if you can find a good one!

I've watched the clips of Anton Fig and Sheila E. (can't believe I just typed her name); pretty boring by contrast with Haynes. Ninety-how-old?

He is 86, according to his bio.

Yup, the boy does definitely have a future in the business.
