Went to the APC concert Friday night and, wow, what a great show.

Anti-war themed...my cup of tea. They played mostly tunes from their eMotive album with some of the bigger hits sprinkled about (The Hollow, The Noose, Magdelana, etc). Josh Freeze wasn't on drums this time...he's on summer tour with Weezer. The drummer was adequate but I was having a tough time being impressed with any of the drum patterns/fills.

All in all it was a great night. Maynard's voice was spot on and James Iha was amazing as always!

Justin,
I had to youtube them to see who and what they were. I found a couple rehearsel videos that had no vocals but the absolute worst sounding drum kit I've ever heard.

Hmmm...can't say that I've heard of any of their rehearsal videos being available. I'd look into some of their better singles (The Noose, Judith, The Hollow) to get a better idea about the band.

I'll admit, the drums aren't what drives the band (Josh Freeze uses a DW kit that, in my opinion, has a muddy feel) but Maynard's vocals are the absolute best I've ever heard. The man has perfect pitch, timing, and expression. He's also the lead singer of Tool, a band which I enjoy far more than A Perfect Circle. Of course that enjoyment has a lot to do with the drummer, Danny Carey, using Sonor drums.

K then. Gonna search some more.
Actually, vocals are what has always attracted me to a band. Gotta have that or I really don't care how good the drummer is.
It's why a became a big Journey fan in my teens. And back then, bands like Kansas, Styx, Triumph, Yes, The Who, Zep
etc...were out.
But back then you HAD to be a great singer to front a band.

And then Bob Dylan showed up, and that was the end of that.

And Willie Nelson
And Tom Petty.
Was never a Dylan fan. I think you also had to be a dead head to like him.

If a musician considers himself an "artist" - the way (s)he plays/sings is ALWAYS irrelevant (usually on the bad side).
But, (s)he has other qualities - lyrics, composition, arrangement, etc.

The "bel canto" today, falls into the same category as awesome playing - people focus on technique, and their speed and knowledge are helping OTHERS in making great songs.
They don't bother "being No.1 in all fields". That era is gone - if You need a good solo, You buy one...

We rarely see guys/ladies who have the full package (like Esperanza Spalding, for example).

P.S. Dylan showed up in the right moment ;)
