Did a pick-up gig yesterday backing up a singer we have worked with before. The event was the 'First Annual Treaty Oaks Jazz Festival' in Austin, TX, sponsored by a group of local merchants to entertain some people and draw some attention to their businesses.

Over time, I have come to recognize 'first annual _____' as code for, "We don't know what we are doing yet, but we are trying."

These folks worked hard to be as organized and hospitable as they could be for a first time out, and we had a good time playing the show.

Downtown Austin has a lot of foot traffic on the weekends, and a decent crowd gathered to catch our set.

Hope they do a second annual.

I have done many such a gig where the Second Annual never materialized, but the gigs were fun all by themselves. As a general rule, the gigs that I played as part of a series of successful annual events never promoted their first event as an annual one. The gig or festival just became such because the first one was so much fun to do.

Your Designers look beautiful. Maybe there was an 11th or 12th commandment that referred to the coveting of your neighbor's Designers. If so...I done broke it.

No one yet has coveted the towel.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the comments on the Designers, and to a lesser extent, on the towel. :?

Gotta thank Sully every time for letting these go. It is such a pleasure to sit down behind these on a gig and have the identical set-up as in the studio, without tearing those down and moving them.

Greg, the towel is personally embroidered by my mother, many years ago, as one of a couple such 'gig towels'.

Covetous yet?
;)
