On drums...

I have a piano player coming over this evening, and it will be the first time the Designers have been put to the musical test. This is just a quick gig for a certain purpose, but maybe more will come of it. In any case, after a year of not playing with anyone, I'm really looking forward...

Thanks, guys. Yes, Cliff, I decided I wanted to be able to pick a kit for the occasion, but that sort of happened right away. There was no sense that I might want to be playing anything other than the Designers.

No recordings made, just roughing out about ten songs we're going to play in a week. But it was fun playing, and really fun hearing the new kit announce itself!

Given that there is only a keyboard for rehearsal (an ancient Wurlitzer at that), nothing in my experience suggested a kit that would "leave room" for other instruments. So the Classix were back-up if the Designers didn't work, but certainly the full spectrum sound from the Designers seemed a better choice. There were a few circumstances when tonalities began to turn into mulch, but backing off on my volume worked the trick.

Piano and drums only, drums mostly played loosely with brushes and very active around the kit, lots of dynamics, rolling bass lines like rock rather than sporadic like jazz. So a little ragged, jazzy and solid, sensitive to the crooning... now that I think of it, mostly accompaniment to the crooning.

Does that sound like an explanation?
