And thank you, Cliff!

Speaking of returns, my 8 is reportedly flattened, bevelled and shipped. Twenty-four bucks including shipping and insurance.

Asked them not to wax the bevel (which they do standardly to facilitate seating), as I want to seal the wood with shellac, but the idea behind waxing strikes me as very good. In the future, I'll be waxing the edges whenever changing heads. Sure can't hurt.

Some say, "Beware waxy build-up on bearing edges." :? :ugeek:

Thanks very much Tim, and it did.

They did a nice job of flattening and re-cutting the bevel. Put it back together on... Poing. Oh no, it still doesn't tune properly. :?

Get out the tape measure. Maybe as much as 1.5 mm out of round. Holy moly, is that normal?

Called the shop. According to them, "all drums are out of round. 1.5 mm shouldn't affect anything." :ugeek:  :ugeek: Okay... well, maybe not... the 8 and 10 Signatures were sure not even thinking about being round. No doubt why they stopped making a 6.

Start thinking about all that hardware on there. What does that damper do? Oh, it applies pressure to the lugs. Really?

Release the pressure on the damper, and sure enough it tunes differently. Still not right, but differently. A truly weird concept. Sure, corrupting the shell will corrupt the resonance.

So tune it as best I can, and the drum sounds wonderful. Don't know why, but at this point, I'm not about to complain! :D

Why do I get the distinct feeling I'm about to start having nightmares about Designer toms going out of round or going "Poing"?? I think this is the plot of a fantastic psychological thriller!

 Psychology can be a little too thrilling at times.

The tom came to me with a defective head, the epoxy bead raised about a quarter inch, on one side, above the collar. It occurred to me that it may have pulled the shell out of true, but I no longer think so. These shells are too thick and too well built to take a set from the pressure applied by a head. So I am left with the likelihood that it is as manufactured.

For a shell like this to warp, enormous heat and moisture would have to be present for extended periods, and there's no way that happened. The problem shows up when the batter head is tapped at the edges, by the lugs, and by poing I mean that there are two tones rather than one. But the full drum sounds good. If it could sound better, I'd sure like to hear how.

It's the Sonor secret. Why everyone loves them. You can get two drum sounds with one drum :D

I'm swearing off of 8's for a while.
1) I don't have one.
2) I like how it forced me to tune my 10 up
3) I will be gigging and one less drum to carry is okay with me
4) Could have no use for it in either band so far material wise.
