Has anyone heard Carlock on Rudder's Matorning album - check it out on Spotify especially the track 3h Club
Can we talk about how to achieve that bass drum sound, I'm hearing probably an 18 wide open...but what heads.
Also what micing techniques would one use?
I think I read that Carlock tunes his bass drum really tight.

Went over to check that out. Listened to a few tracks. It would be a gift to understand how all those bass sounds were achieved. But I can see why you say an 18. It's a very chewy bass sound, one I associate with Aquarian heads. The entire sound of the band sounds as if it has been fed through a plasticizer; verrrrry chewy. I would have guessed a fairly low tuned batter with reso tensioned for tone, but still relatively low.

I'd mount a mic inside the kick, up near the batter, and another outside at the reso... but that's the only trick I know, so take that and 125ยข to your nearest newstand...

Hope someone can help you out more. Thanks for bringing that up, a great way to ask a tuning question. Enjoyed the tunes, the little bit of them we're allowed to listen to. Never heard 'em before.

I notice he endorses Remo. If they are, then a PS3 with Amb reso. Wide open, low but resonant tuning. I hear no reason the kick could not be a 20 or 22, except that the sound is well contained like an 18. Who knows what engineering is doing for that sound.

I would try coated PS3's on both sides.

His DVD is phenominal. Breath of fresh air that guy is. In sound and technic.

Edit: Youtube his dvd, I bet you can see a lot on it.
Ah and I forgot. He's the guy that uses all ride cymbals. Has no crashes.

Edit 2: okay did a quick youtube. Doesn't look like an 18. Hard to tell but his kick could even be a 22. Pretty big sounding drum.
