Post subject:  Brass snare wires on the Hilite snare...

A week or two ago I replaced the mongrel snare wires that came with the Hilite snare I got recently with a set of Puresound Custom 20 strand steel wires. They worked much better, and would have been adequate to stay with.

Today the testing continued with installation of a set of Sonor 24 strand brass wires. I have never owned (or played, so far as I know) brass snare wires before this. The outcome was pretty much as expected – a softer, mellower snare sound; not quite as crisp or as much initial attack as the steel wires.

I am extremely pleased with the results. They deliver a sound and feel very much like a calfskin reso. I have been playing the Hilite snare with these wires today with my old Rogers kit, and the vintage sound and feel of the Hilite is a great fit with this kit.

I would not want to use brass wires on everything, but I think they are going to stay on the Hilite, and I think I may get another set to try on some of the Designer snares as well.

Sounds pretty cool, Cliff. Last night I would have appreciated something with a little more goosh and less snap than my Lite snare, at least in its current tuning. Don't think I'm going to change wires on it, but its good to know it could be softened in that way.

I spent an awful lot of time on the brushes because the snare lacked bottom in that circumstance, but maybe that was more a function of no bass player. As the evening wore on, I used the sticks more often, and that may have coincided with gaining comfort using the kick to fill for the missing bass.

I've got a feeling that Hilite would have been the snare for the evening. Glad you're enjoying it!
