Took the Designer bop to an outdoor gig with a PA. Never miked this kit before. One mic on the bass, one of those egg-shapped D things, at the unported reso.

Question: if you're miked, why use anything bigger than an 18? unless it is an aesthetic choice. Holy Moly, what a sound! I was stunned.

                                      :D :D :D :D :D

Good question.

My studio Designer 18" has an internal D6 / external D112; with the gigging Designer 18" I use just an external D112 on an unported reso, and if the sound system is adequate, I don't need any more than that.

Stand back...

...pretty soon, some 'Premier whore' is gonna tell us why a 20x16 kick is not enough, and needs to be 20x18, or 22x18, or 24x18.
8-)

p.s. Is a Premier whore one that is (i) making a debut, or, (ii) better than other whores?

Shhhh. It's a misnomer. Could be a john, could be a pimp, can't be a whore.

For me, its a feel thing PA or not. I like and prefer the sound and low end rumbling through the drum riser.... No Premiers here....

Dave, without a PA I understand perfectly. I'm still looking for a 20 for just that reason: Volume. Cubic Inches.

I have a friend who plays a 32", infact, he is about to add a second 32 to his kit. I've played both of his kits and there is a huge difference sitting behind a 22 as opposed to a 32....

Its to the point where he almost doesn't like the 22's anymore....

Smaller bass drums always pack a better punch, I think. And they're sweet to play, even through the PA.

The only problem is that if a guitar with pedals, keyboards and a bass come along - they're almost useless... For a gig with more VOLUME, the inch difference matters... :)
