What?!?

You say there actually is ANOTHER birch Hilite out there?!?

My 22" bd and 14"tt were birch... You could tell just by looking at them...

Pretty sure Tim...

Shells were thinner - the 14" was almost half of the 12" in shell thickness...
And both the bd and the tt had a distinct YELLOW color inside - nothing like maple... It looke birch all the way, except for the Scandi veneer...
I talked to SONOR - they confirmed the shells were all original, and that it couldn't be anything else than a SONORLITE shell (without the veneer). They said both shells were prototype (since they were from Feb 1988)
Plus, the 14 sounded brighter than all the rest of the set... Judging from my S Classix now, the sound was almost the same - very similar...

Personally - I adored that bass drum... :)
It was WAY better than the bass regular maple bass drum a friend here has...

Dunno, Goki. All I know is that DeJonette's official website states; "One of my favorite[s]... is a Sonor HiLite Exclusive, it is black and copper plated hardware with birch shells that five a really warm projection..." (http://www.jackdejohnette.com/ > 'SETUP')

Is that a typo or reality? Cliff says he has written to ask (presumably to CONTACT), but never gotten an answer.

Note that he says the projection is warm. That is my sense of birch as opposed to maple that, while it has warm projection, has warmth all over so he wouldn't likely mention projection first... if that makes any sense.

Great clip, Goki. Thanks for posting that. I am off to Blue Note Records to get a copy of that on the way to my house. ;)

Yup, JD's website say that they are birch, but I have sat 3 feet in front of that kit and I would guess not.

I would bet that whoever does his website failed to make the distinction between Lites and HiLites.

No, I have never gotten a response. Wish I had asked Jack when I met him at the Blue Note last year.

Bought a copy from Amazon. I'm looking forward to having that... but man, the depth of musicianship! Almost – but not quite – makes me want to hide my head in rock where I know where I am. :oops:

Dunno. Seems like you have done a lot of work in the past few months developing skills and techniques to move yourself into other areas. Something like this certainly gives us something to reach for, but it is more encouraging than discouraging.

But it sure is a pleasure to see the product of that much confidence and experience, unbothered by ego or need to prove anything.

Honestly, I would also like to see just the core trio (Tyner / Dejohnette / Carter) do more on their own as a trio. I love the piece with Scofield, but the banjo clips in the trailer on youtube did not do much for me.
