I'm not at all certain that there is any such thing as true jazz vis a vis false jazz. If there is false, it would be the effeminate Kenny G style.

I'm not even sure what rock is. The only difference I can tell between the two, as a generalized statement, is that rock is more squared up and its structures more regimented, while jazz is looser with less rigid forms. I'm attracted to the repetitive force of rock and the looseness of jazz, but I can't say that I love either, per se. :|

On the whole, I prefer Vivaldi to rock, and Palestrina to jazz. Unfortunately, there's no work for a drummer in those guys. :cry:

In a nutshell:

What sort of music I like doesn't have very much to do with it.

As a drummer, I look for rhythmic patterns that appeal to me and that underlie the music.

I have a harder time understanding the underlying patterns of jazz than of rock.

As I work to become a better jazz player, I become a better rock player. The reverse is not generally true, although I'd wait to hear that from someone who started out loving jazz.
