For several months I used another 14" snare drum (wood) on my left, apart from my regular D-505... I usually had a small cymbal placed on the head, to simulate a techno-snare sound... Worked rather well, but then w got rid of those songs, and the snare was no longer needed... From this point of view - I doubt I'll use that setup again - although I'd love to get my hands on a 12" Designer snare...

For me the snare is like the lead voice of my kit, so having more than one doesn't make much sense.  Brian

I have never even been tempted to use a side snare. I think Brian's explanation probably fits me, too. Kelly, are you considering adding one to your setup? |

I have heard recorded songs wherein the apparent use of two snares is quite effective, and I can imagine going that route in the studio. But generally speaking, I think the snare should speak with a couple of distinct voices: open and ringing at the edges and deep and punchy in the center. One reason I very much like the 8" Designer snare is the variation between center and side hits, as I've said before. But to echo Brian and Cliff; the snare is the central note around which the other drums orbit, so having two might create a problem of focus. Interesting question. |

I used 2 snares for a while. And watched many players using 2 snares. I quickly came to the conclusion that unless both drums sounded vastly different, the only person in the room who new you had 2 snares was YOU  .I used my HLD580 tuned quite fat, and a custom 3mm Aluminium 12x8, or 13x5 Gretsch RM Maple, or 10 Yamaha Tamborito snare thingy pegged up. After trying to make this work for me, I realised that I really wanted something inbetween. And went back to what had always worked for me. 14x8 (ish), tuned quite high, with wires backed off, still quite fat in the centre, and the rest of the drum is a myriad of snares.

It makes sense for the R&B guys to have the two, a deep ballad snare and a cracking main snare. Same for drum & bass. Do I use one,yes sometimes, but its usually upside down so I can scratch the snares as well. I usually only bring it out for an improv show, I don't use them on my regular gigs, I have enough crap to move around... |

Honestly the only one I saw do anything interesting with it was Virgil. That's when I tried it. After watching multiple videos yesterday, seems like everyone has one now and it was more annoying to me than anything else. Seems they all go for that tight timbale sound with it and I hate it. My brain is begging them to get off it. I would hate it by itself but when I have their main snare to use in contrast I really hate it. |
