Aside from the obvious building blocks of single and double stroke rolls, what rudiments do you use the most and find indispensable? Obviously a drummer needs single stroke (which I don't excel at) and double stroke rolls, but I can count on my fingers the number of times I've tried to use a triple stroke roll. I don't ever think in terms of counting four, five, six, seven or what-have-you stroke rolls, and I have to force myself to think in terms of flams, let alone all the possible variations like flamascues, flam paradiddle-diddles and pataflaflas (can't you go to jail for that?). Paradiddles are where I live, and I probably over use them; to avoid that I sometimes practice in single strokes, but it's very difficult for me to resist the temptation to diddle somewhere. Unfortunately, to the majority of the English speaking world, diddling is tantamount to swindling, and for the coarser members of the race, a roll in the hay. I though I had been taught all the rudiments when I was young, maybe sixteen in all, but apparently I rejected most of them. Imagine my despair at discovering things like the triple ratamacue. I can't even pronounce it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudiment |

Gregory, I don't get to play much lately, working 12-13 hour nights, but I try to get on the pad every day or two as I walk past it to bed. Besides Flam-Taps, I really like to play paradiddles along with doubles, because, with accents, the combination is more rhythmic than either alone: RLRR LLRR LRLL RRLL When I took lessons later in life, I found I was able to overcome my derision of rudiments, but it doesn't make it any less challenging to play them well. Cheers, Brian |

I hear that, Brian. Perhaps if I had some understanding of the benefit of the more esoteric rudiments, I might be more inclined to practice them. I am very grateful for the rudiments that I learned when young. Thanks for the suggestions. |

Any chance you could list the 16? I've been avoiding this topic. I hate it because I am so weak in this area. Daily, in my car lunch time, I do quite a bit of sticking. Even have a meter in there. Mostly doubles, triples, paradiddles and quads. Been toying with double paradiddles but that kinda stuff doesn't really interest me. I already have a full time job. I just try to get things faster and smoother. Others I like to do I don't know the technical terms but I like them just for the excercise. 8 count single stroke back and forth and push it to 16 count on occasion. Great work out for me. |

Hysterical Tim. I don't dare get behind a kit without warming up anymore. Crap hurts. Okay, who knows how to do them all and wants to post clips of each with explanation for beginners? Tim? 15 minutes a day, 26 days you'll be all done |

No kidding dude, drive the van for 8 hours then haul all that crap and set up and trying to play cold is nowhere near a reality any more. 26 days to figure them out, then another year to get them right, then another year to apply them all to the kit.then I guess you can try them all with your feet like derek roddy(I don't know how he does it) |

This guy may put you to sleep getting there, but he does a good job showing how each is done. Skip #1. Don't know what it's about. http://www.ehow.com/videos-on_3270_play ... ments.html |
