I assume you are referring to the very end after Philly Joe's solo? Actaully nobody ever turns the time around, it just seems that Monk came in playing his typically quirky style in a very "on the beat" way and I think the other guys were just kind of playing off that. It does seem a bit weird, but not like anything that was not intentional to me. Maybe not the slickest ending, but... I wish I could suffer like that!  - D. |

Interesting characterization – ‘organized traffic pile-up’. Sounds like very nicely flowing traffic to me. Are you speaking about the entire tune, the drum solo, or something else? |

Uh, oh. We're barely out of the driveway and ths kids are already complaining about the traffic.  Wait until we get on the road with Coleman et, al. Gonna be a long trip. Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? ...And David thougt this was just an isolated incident.

Sounds better not played through laptop speakers. Still not sure I like it, but I never have liked Monk all that well. There are some impressive moments that get even my humble attention. I like watching Jones play, but his expression unsettles me. Is he suffering from substance abuse... or what? |

Who can say what may have been the situation on the day, but bios I have read indicate that Philly Joe Jones had a drug habit. What is it about Monk that you don't like? I suspect it may be a of of the things that I most appreciate Monk for, like his unusual sense of rhythm, his ability to make disonance sound right, and masterful use of empty space. At the opposite end of the spectrum from you, based on the music alone, and with no understanding of what living, travelling and communicating with the man would be like, I have to say that this is the guy that I would most want the opportunity to play with, from that era. Like some McCoy Tyner stuff, a lot of Monk stuff just makes me laugh, and I believe that was often the intent. |

I understand what you like about him, Cliff. You certainly peg it correctly that I don't like that particular kind of jangling, all angles and sharp points. A little of that goes a long way. Joe Jones certainly appears to have a monkey riding him. What a shame. |

I don't know who's who in that video but, I'm proud of myself as I made it to the end. Just a personal goal no applause please. Not sure how you can focus on any one expression. Not one of them looks like they want to be there. The close-up of the drummer, I swear I read his thoughts, "I gotta go mow the f'n lawn after this" |
