As far as I can see, ALL 3 are toms, but a beautiful set for sure. PLUS, it's not sparkle, so no chances for cracks in the lacquer...

Hey Goki,

I saw this on ebay just before it was posted here, and thought it might be nice to pick up, but then I noticed that it was a hanging 14".

Too bad. With a floor tom and a snare, this would be nice.

Ooops :oops: Missed that it was a hanger. Saw the knob and thought it was an upside down floor.

Well, one can buy a rim cradle for it - and remove the hanging mechanism. It still is a very fair price, I think...

My Hilite 14x12 tom sounded GREAT put on a cradle... :)

Think about it once again Cliff... ;)

On my yellow laq Designer kit, there's a crack in the finish of the 14" floor tom. Are the sparkle finishes more susceptible to that?

I don't think so Gunnar. I've seen cracks appear in meticulously kept drums that were lacquer painted.

Lacquer... let's be specific: Nitrocellulose lacquer is inherently brittle, and as it ages becomes more so. Repeated changes in humidity (did someone say St. Louis?) causing the wood to swell and shrink will crack it. The addition of "sparkle" media should not affect it. At least, I have never heard of flakes making paint films less stable, but it is possible that a certain formulation of paint over a span of time was inferior.

The Delite silver sparkle (or whatever) had a problem with cracks within 2-3 years of purchase.

Hilites develop hairline cracks too, but not in the first 10 years of making... I'm sure any lacquered finish would react the same...
