I had covered the one front wall that the PA was facing completely in styrofoam to help absorb some of the bounce. Stuff was about 4 inches thick. Back then I was playing 7 days a weeks and back then I broke sticks regularly. Started to become a habit to stick the broken stick into the styrofoam wall. My buddy, also a drummer, rented the room next to me and started bringing his broken sticks over. After 8 years, it was an amazing site. Everyone told me to take pics of it. Neatest looking thing. We were all too young for a camera though.

It's okay, Kelly. I photographed it for you...

haha! very cool.
That's pretty thin though compared to what mine looked like.
No worries...my hair did the same thing.

Got a message from Bopworks's Chris Bennet. He had this to say about bead durability:

Since you are playing lighter and using the tip more than the shoulder of the stick on the
hi hat, what you're describing makes perfect sense. A tip (no pun intended) would be to use clear nail varnish on the
tips of the sticks. The varnish is actually nitrocellulose lacquer. I usually do about three applications and let dry over night.

I then asked if shellac would work as well.

No, give the sticks three coats of nail polish, allowing drying time in between coats. Shellac is not the same as nitrocellulose lacquer and won't blend with the existing sealer on the sticks....

Since I know shellac and lacquer are not the same, I'm not sure what I learned except that shellac won't stick. Apparently he has some luck extending the life of the bead with lacquer, although I'm not sure I know why that should be, since lacquer is not particularly strong. Conversation ongoing...
