The spring pushes the receiver up, so that when there's no rod, it won't fall inside (although it has the tune lock).
The foam is used for soundproof.
If you replace the foam inside the lugs, you're done - there won't be any rattle at all!!!

Anyone know why the Lite/Sig lugs had springs in them? I took a tom apart the other day to sort out a rattle, finding a couple of springs off centre, hence the rattle...why are they there? Can't see a reason for it myself. |

I've had a million of them apart and can't remember what I saw. I do remember the spring and foam in there though. Is it not providing some kind of cushion for the tension rod threaded piece? Or is possibly used as a "anti-rattle" device? |

Kelly and I have the same problem: memory. Does the spring not hold the receiver in place so that the rod can't push it away, but still allowing some flexibility so that the rod does not have to approach from an unreasonably specific angle? The foam, I know, is for silencing any rattle, and has probably disintegrated by now. |
