Whoa hold it there a moment, I always thought that his Hilites sounded great on that video, what are you listening to the video through, the audio isn't that great on the video either?
Smitty's Pearls sound horrible that's for sure (they did on the original vhs), he's using a 593 too, never noticed that before...Have a listen to the Vital Tech Tones albums drums sound great on there - Designers

Wouldn't matter what I listen through if it was all his video's.
They don't sound terrible here, I'll give you that, but they don't sound great either. It's Steve Smith for God's sake, you would think they would be exceptional everywhere.
In comparison, I can find thousands of kits on youtube I think sound amazing.
I think it just might be he's a little bit more ole school than I prefer. Or a little bit more on the jazz end of things. Prolly both.

Sincerely appreciate the commentary.
I think we are still missing it though. But that would be not making myself clear.
I am certaintly not a fan of Hilites, and a lot of other kits, but that actually means nothing when it comes to electronic media.
I've heard kits that I know are very low level but sound extroadinary in media.
My point is, for years this has been going on. At drum festivals and the like, though I am not a huge fan, I always anticipate Smith coming out and have these expectations that he will rise above the rest in every regard. He is afterall, considered by many, to be the most prolific drummer on the planet. I have always been disappointed in his drum sound, not so much his playing. Appreciate the playing but it's really not my cup of tea. But his sound always seems inferior to those around him.

The original meaning of the post had me busting a gut. Yes I humor myself like no other.
Here is the God of the drum world, on a top of the line Sonor kit, with a non-matching tom. It just screams Sonor.
Sonor is no respector of persons lmao. I think of all the nonsense and gripes on the Sonor forum we all had for years. ha.
Not even Steve Smith can get a matching tom. I wish I was there when he opened the box....."Da Fuxx?"
