Two different bearing edges and quick change snare wires are pretty user friendly, esp. for those who might like a more "Gretsch" snare sound. I don't get the black finish with white lug spacers.... too "tuxedo" for me. I also hate S-hoops. You can't play brushes with them at all. - D. |

Not sure what I think of it. I mean, it is clear that Sonor has been making snares for various of its higher profile endorsers, at least for those that have ideas about how drums work, and those are being marketed to 1) fans of the pro, and 2) fans of every nuance from the company. It is interesting that neither tunesafe nor tunelock can be on the drum, since the "spin down by finger" approach wouldn't work. Thus, Phonic lugs. The round bearing edge is intriguing. I'm not sure it will make the drum sound like a Gretsch, but if it makes the drum feel like a Gretsch, I am all for it. Why playing Gretsch feels like it does is beyond me, but I like it. Gap in the lower hoop seems intelligent to me for its stated purpose: I cannot personally imagine changing my snares often enough to warrant the system, but it is nice. Easier, I suppose, to tune the bottom head than having to lift the snares off with a stick laid across the rim. Why are S hoops impossible for brushes, David? |

I assume as you are pulling the brushes off the head to the side the brushes slide under the edge of the S-hoop and get slightly caught underneath it?  I agree about the lower hoop Greg and I'm sure in a studio situation it will be very handy indeed but for 'normal' use it will barely be used. On the subject of tune safe there seems to be a split vote on whether people actually dig it or not. I guess it will suit 50% of the people

I like the asymmetry in the hoops and edges. The snare wire quick change is a little much for most users, but for those who can benefit from it, cool! |

Unless you are so precise with your brushes as to not go near the outer 1/2" of the drum head all around, they get caught under the rim. I prefer to use the entire head for brushes playing, and I'm not particularly precise!  Also, I could never figure out what people heard in the S-hoops that made them so desirable? I much prefer the older Slingerland stick-saver style for a "curved inward" batter hoop. If you're partial to those dampeners like GH demonstrated then I guess they would stay safely in place with those S-hoops. - D. |
