For some reason, that finish does nothing for me… indeed, it makes me a little uncomfortable, as if I were looking at mistreated drums. Maybe they don't translate well in the photos. In about 1980, I bought a couple of Yamaha boom stands. Compared to the Rogers pieces I had been using, these things were robust, and they were intelligently designed. I still have them, in fact, although a threaded insert for one of the main clamps pulled out some time ago and now has a hose clamp on it. I used those two cymbal stands for my Phonics and Signature kits for twenty years, and still use them for my church gig. That's a long way around the bush to say that I have an increasing respect for Yamaha these days. The creative energy they put into drum making has pushed the drum industry forward in many ways. The PHX series, for instance, is compelling, even if just for that snazzy lug design. I am, however, a victim of my own drum prejudices... and the fact that I'm not looking for new drums or a new drum company. But if I were looking, I'd certainly want to test drive some Yams. |

They have always had killer finishes on killer drums. I got a set of the 30th Anniversary Maple Customs a few years ago that are amazing. For touring I dont think there is anything better or tougher, except maybe Tama. Sonors are pretty finicky on the road, at least mine were. I am interested to see if they can maintain their quality and identity since moving their production to China. So far it seems like everything is still just as good, but I bet it turns into a Link Era/post Link Era discussion for drum nerds in the next few years |

Yamaha's hardware design has not changed in over 20 years. Because they nailed it back then and realized it was a great thing, and have only slightly refined things over the years so everything is still compatible. Sonor, on the other hand, UGH... - D. |
