Have any of you tried any of these? They look rather nice, and quite different from "the usual." Clicking on the ID or Buy Now links brings up a photograph of the specified wire sets. They look nicely made, and they also come in extended lengths for the Throwoff II users among us. http://groverpro.com/product/snare-wires I'm curious (at least as curious as I can be at roughly $50 per) about this one: http://www.groverpro.com/gppwp/wp-conte ... res_sx.jpg |

Greg, I bought a used Grover snare once that had Grover wires on it. One of the most profound differences I found is they are so dry. I think this is probably true of all their models just based on the design. If you like a really crisp snare sound without much "snares sustain" they might be worth experimenting with. Or if a buzzing snare drives you crazy. In other words you can't really get a loose snare sound out of them. When you loosen them up they sound weird and unmusical. But for a really poppy tight sound (funk?) or for making ghost notes or jazz accents really crisp and pronounced they work. I couldn't really jive with them. - D. |

That's interesting, David. Some of the sets claim to dry out the response, but not all. Looking at the drums Grover sells, there is a remarkable triple snare set on one strainer, each individually adjustable, each of different material, each meant to resonate at different dynamics. I suppose that's adding a pound of complication to gain an ounce of refinement, but it all depends on how that refinement sounds. Super dry crisp snares don't really appeal to me either - they take a bit of getting used to and every stroke had better be perfect! |

Necro thread, but... I have used a set of Club Darks on my '65 Slingerland COB 14x5" Krupa. The snare shell and hoops are all COB and ring like bells. These wires help tame that a touch and sound just right with the drum--better than Snappys or Puresounds--which are all too sizzly. |
