On drums...

I've been using coated G2's on my toms. But they're too warm for the music that I play (alternative rock). The clear G2's sound like plastic when I tune them low, when I tune them mid high they sound like paper! I figured out a solution. Crank the bottom head (clear G1) super tight, and put a middle tension on the G2 clear, much better! Can anyone recommend a clear 2 ply head for loud alternative rock? Remo or Evans. These are the level 360's. I'm a little disappointed with Evans right now.

I can't recall ever having used 2 ply heads so can't respond with a suggestion. But I think the desirability of the tonal characteristics of Evans heads vs Remo, for instance, depends more on the drum itself. On the birch S Classix that by nature accentuate the attack, Evans sounded plastic whereas Remo sounded warmer . On maple Designers, which go to warm right away, the opposite is true and more attack is desirable, and so they do not sound plastic.

Thanks Greg, that makes sense, I have a friend coming over to help me. He thinks it's operator error more than Evans.

2 ply heads fit the style of music that I play (Metal). My friend solved my tuning problem, turned out to be operator error after all. The excessive brightness was making me tune them too low, which resulted in a cardboard sound. Then I tuned them too high which made a papery sound. My friend helped me find a balance between the 2. I saved the frequencies to my tune bot, so I wouldn't have this problem again. The clear G2's are very 1 dimensional and have a limited tuning range. In metal music they sound amazing!

Ah. That kind of alternative rock.

I tuned both heads to the same pitch for maximum resonance. I'm very pleased!
