On drums...

Not my pic but a great shot of the Giant Step pedal height on a 22 kick.
From the look of this I would have thought I would have been okay with the positioning, but I wasn't. A little too high strike zone for me. And too much feel lost lowering the beater. Shame. On a 20 there would just be no way for me.
Sonor?? wtf were you thinking. One of the coolest pedals I have ever played and you fix the height?

Perhaps a bass drum riser would correct the problem, Kelly?

I've never used one myself but I've heard decent reviews from people who have!

Really super nice pedals Justin. I don't know about the riser but i've been half tempted in the past to take a saw to one.

Tis true tis true. At least, with an EQ4, the sound does not seem to shift much. You heard how it picks up in the H4.

Not ready for a riser; seems like using a walker and I don't have enough tennis balls to decorate the thing.




Trouble is, no place to saw the thing and still have it work.

Sorry, to bring up an old subject, but I'm trying to understand how a $400 pedal does not allow for beater height adjustment? Is it just that it will go higher, but not lower for the 22" center hit? They advertise as "fully adjustable" beater set up, so I don't get it.

The f'd up thing is I still want one. They are that good. But impossible for me to get to work right.

Cliff is right David. The beater hits too high and trying to lower it really ruins the whole feel and effect of the thing.
It is the frame. If you lower the beater anywhere near the center of the drum you have hardly any beater length left. Most of the beater bar will be below the center of the pedal. What a shame.

I live in a parallel but dissimilar universe, in which the GS pedal works on 18s and 20s, and in which the difference in sound between centric and eccentric hits is noticeable but of no concern. I use the same beater adjustment on both 18 and 22. I don't use full extension, obviously, but did some testing and discovered that once the beater is off center, there is a huge amount of head surface where the sound changes very little before it changes again, near the outer edge.

The beater, of course, is not centerable - a new word, I know - by design. The center is taken up by the pedal strap arrangement, and the beater is mounted to the right of that.

I did cut down one beater shaft to bring the beater further inboard, but there was no too much cost in feel - with that, I agree.

Recording and miking - well, we all know how that works out, so what's the difference. But live, my kicks sound beautiful to my ears.

As to position, the beater hits just below the R on the 20, which does not seem extreme. If there was ever a problem in feel with the beater adjusted to that height, it has long since passed.
