...to build a custom 18" bass drum that will match the Hilite set in color and looks?

Sounds like a good idea, Goki. :D What's the plan?

Hey Goki,

I think having one is a great idea, especially after looking at that photo!

If you can get a shell and all the parts cheaply enough, it would be nice to have that 18" option, but I don't know what kind of shell you would be starting with, and what it would sound like.

If you can do it cheaply, and offering two kick drums might help you sell your HilLites when the time comes, I would go go for it.

On the other hand, if it is going to dilute your funds available for Designers, and leave you with something that you can't recover your investment on, I would be patient, and increase your chances of being ready for Designers.

Gotta admit, I would be tempted, too.

I wish I could match the finish on my Rogers kit; I would buy a Keller shell and have Precision Drum make me an 18" for my that kit.
;)

The bass drum will look like a Hilite - all the parts can't be original, says Gerd from St Drums...
Plus - no Hilite badge. And on top of it all, the bass could easily reach $600... My Gretsch Catalina bop set (12,14,18) costed the same, including shipping...

So, it looks like another idea is wiped off the board... :(

Saving for a Designer - seriously... And it looks like I'll be gigging the Hilites, when I buy the Designers (absolutely no chance of selling them back here)...

Why is that, Goki? Local economy or lack of interest?

Well Greg - getting more than $1200 for a drum set without hardware is impossible...
People like to give $800 max for a full set, with snare and cymbals...
Those who have more than $1200 to spend buy electronic kits...

So, if You buy expensive gear, and want to upgrade - it's VERY VERY difficult to make something...
And we're a closed market because of taxes. I pay 37,5% of the declare value, or whatever the customs officer thinks is the price.
So, the cheapest Designer I would find would cost me $2500 (if I manage to lie about the value ;) )
And that is my 4 month salary, or a whole year of putting money aside - which is not possible also, because of the current economic situation...

Having all this in mind Greg - making a custom bass drum seemed like the right thing to do - splitting the set in two - 18bd,10tt,14tt/ft for gigs and 22bd,12tt,16ft for louder stuff and practise.
But I got stuck on 2 points:
1) If it's above $600, then Tim's Designer offer was a deal of a lifetime!!!
2) I would kill my dream of having a Designer - and that sucks BIG TIME!!!

The idea of me saving for a Designer and having a child (or two) and also paying mortgage for an apartment or house is just tooo much. At least with our mortgage rates it is.. :(
On the other hand - I get about $30 per gig - that means I'll have to make 85 gigs to afford a Designer (or play roughly 3 years with this tempo) ...

The ONLY logical solution - I started buying lottery tickets...

Being an optimist after you've got everything you want doesn't count.

I would start saving up for the either/or scenario. I know the hilite kicks are rare but there might be one, on the other hand you may still score a cheap designer. They exist. You could also get a bass drum lift and use your floor tom as a kick for small gigs. Kinda goofy but it works!

Either way, don't lose heart, stuff has a way of popping up, we should all be lucky that we can play our own kits with our own cymbals. There are lots of folks in the world who cant!
We are all super lucky that we all have pretty awesome sounding gear, a lot of people have done a lot more with much worse...

Tru Dat 8-) . Keep putting those pennies away Goki, you said it yourself, High End kits don't sell, just wait 'til one pops up in your sizes ;) , might take awhile, but no-one is buying, could be an opportunity to get a deal. :)
The disadvantages you have selling your HiLites, will be similar to that of a Designer sale, but with you on the beneficial side.
You're HiLites probably sound better than Designers anyway  .
