Don't have one and never did, Jeff. But I have owned Phonics snares, and they're great drums. Don't see how the addition of rosewood veneer could detract.
Do you have an opportunity to buy one?

I've got one thats in VGC+, and just picked up a beater for gigging. Haven't had them side by side, but I'm sure the VGC shell is thicker, and sounds a bit drier and snappier  .I set up the beater on my Jam kit (Phonic), and recorded a rehearsal with her. Very nice  , fat,warm, with that woody, dark 'branch snapping' crack when you lay into her.I suppose I wanted to know if anyone had seen/owned D516's that differed from each other. And could say,whether or not, the shell differences create noticeable changes in sound characteristics. The subject of shell thicknesses, and ply lay ups differing, was discussed on Scotts forum. But not sound characteristics  .Cheers |

Jeff, she loves Australia, and she has deep friendships there; but the economics and logistics of that sort of a move are daunting. Lily loves it here, too, although American rural cuisine does not meet her approval - surprise, surprise. Fortunately for me, her home is where I am, and vice versa. |
