Sliced the end off my bass drum's Big Boy, knocked the press fit cap out, popped it on the newly exposed end, and viola, a more proportional tom mount. The cap is held on by a tube that presses against the center hole in the post, and is held in position by four protrusions that line up with the corners of the D formations.

Photos: Before, After, Detail & The Removed Bit.

In this case, I also benefitted because the bubbling chrome section was also removed. :D

Thanks, guys.

Sorry, missing detail: Nothing fancy. I used a carpenter's cutoff saw, with a carbide-tooth blade (wood cutting) to get that perpendicular cut. Aluminum is no match for the carbide, although I was a shade worried about how the chrome would fare... and thus the two practice cuts showing in the photo of the removed piece, first with a hack saw to ascertain composition, the second a test with the power tool.
