I went to visit my folks on Saturday and stopped in at DCP as well. His shop is now located where the pawn shop used to be, which also had some cool drums in it's day.
It's unreal in there. Absolutely as good as Forks in Nashville or Tommy's in Austin, better than almost any other I have seen for it's size.
The amount of high quality cymbals and snare drums is staggering. He even has UFIP in stock. He has ottoviano in stock, those things are incredible.
The snare drum wall is unlike anything I have ever seen. I was there with a guy named Pete and Shane just kept pulling different drums off the shelf, telling us we had to hear this one and that. My favorites were a canopus and the poplar Craviotto. I can't even begin to tell you how good they all sounded. I had to leave.
Bottom line is the guy has an absolute world class drum shop, and I feel like we all need to do what we can to keep him in business. He loves his job and loves his drums.

I came home and went through all my snares to see if any of those would fit in. Turns out all of them are tuned to the same pitch except my Lite and Hilite. I should maybe change it up a little. It was interesting in that listening to my Slingerland and George Way snares I could hear the Canopus and in the Lite I could hear some of the Craviotto. All different, but all great drums. He just has a ton of great drums, but it was nice to go from that massive wall of sound to my little stash and remember that I do too.

Certainly impressive that DCP has gotten rooted enough in a short period of time to warrant expansion. Tough to do in a somewhat difficult economy.

I had hoped to get up that way when I was in CT for the holidays, but there is always more to do than there is time in which to do it.

Isn't it amazing how easy it is to make every snare you own sound like 'your sound', if you don't maintain the discipline to actually use them for different sounds?! :?

Tim, I don't know when you were last at Tommy's; did you know tha the shop is not in the big building on the east side of the street any more, but in a much smaller building across the street.

Man, imagine if we did have the space for all the drums we think we could use.
:?

You are right on cliff, time to start tuning some things a little differently. i put an evans snare head with the ring on it(genera maybe?) on an old ludwig 400 the other night and really dug it, i haven't used that drum in a long time but now it has more of a funky tone.

Cliff I haven't been to Tommy's in about 10 years. I remember it as being pretty impressive, I'm sad to hear it has downsized so much, especially in such a vibrant musical community. Did it have anything to do with them shutting down the Fibes operation or was that completely separate?

Tim,

I am not really sure what the reason was.

I seem to recall hearing that it was initially to use the large building for Fibes production, etc., but I don't really know.

Even you could run out of space, at your current pace. ;)

Yes, I'm glad to hear things are going well for him. Remarkable, in this economy, but he must be doing something right. I always enjoyed working with him.

Must be nice to see a drum store flourishing. All the ones I knew are gone now, except one which shrank from a serious venue into a one room office on a second floor of an low rent office building. :(

Excellent, I wish I could afford to support his shop. I wish Shane all the success.
