I got the GC flier in the mail the other day and they are running the 'Paiste Prototype' deal again: buy one at 50% off list, get a second piece of equal or lesser value for free. The deal applies to what is purportedly prototypes for the 'Twenty Series', and Paiste has 'opened their vaults' to GC to sell thousands of prototypes.

Now I don't believe that bit for even a second, but rather suspect that it is just a mechanism for Paiste and GC to sell unlabeled 'Twenty Series' pieces at substantially lower average sell price, without disruptiing the rest of the sales channel.

Still, using 'buy one/get one free' I was able to pair up 18" china/17" crash, 14' top high hat/14" bottom high hat, 10" splash/8" splash, and get out the door under $500 for all 6 pieces.

Lat year, I stuck my toes into Paiste world for the first time and bought a 20" ride and an 18" crash in the same deal.

I put this set up on the Rogers kit last night, and played them for a while. I don't think they will ever become my favorite cymbals, but I like 'em. I am looking forward to seeing what they become after they relax from being 'played in' a bit.

You know, GC gets a lot of flak(deservedly so in a lot of ways)... But I've gotten some really, really good deals on some used gear at various GCs..
Shocking, but true.

That's a nice set-up, Cliff. How do they sound?

Hey Ron,

Except fot the hats, they remind me a bit in character of my early 90's K's, but they are brand new, and they sound and feel 'new'. That'll work in as they get 'played in', and release tension a bit.

The hats are very light, and remind me more of my K Constantinople hats than of my K hats - substantially softer 'chick' sound, and also 'washier', like the Constantinoples.

I checked these out the other day as well, I was going for a set that would sound good together and I wouldn't cry if any broke.
No luck, just a ton of rides and one crash that was a total dud. I may take a drive to another store tomorrow, it really is a good deal if you can make it work for you

For me, the 'Traditionals' are the most satisfying, I suppose because they come closest to the old Turkish Ks, yet, with their own 'vibe'.
Of course, they're the costliest in Paiste's line, but I've had good luck buying two on Ebay at 1/2 the new CYMBALS ONLY price.
BTW, I believe, with Paiste, if you choose by series type & weight, you won't go wrong.
It's been rumored(?) that they were actually made by the Dirils and their current limited availability is the result of a business disagreement.

This letter from Eric Paiste addresses some of the issues:

I’ve received some information about rumors travelling around the world on internet blogs and forums, regarding our Twenty Series. I thought it might be a good idea to make our side of the story public. Because I do not believe in marketing BS, I will keep it brief and to the point:

Paiste received raw materials, specifically unfinished goods, from Murat and Ibrahim Diril in Turkey. We then hammered and lathed this material to make Paiste cymbals, the Twenty series. It is not true that Twenty cymbals were made entirely by Diril, or that we just applied logos to “finished cymbals” received from them.

Unfortunately, what we are dealing with is a disgruntled supplier, who has lost both Paiste and another cymbal company as customers. Be that as may be, I still wish them well for the future.

We discontinued our relationship with the Diril brothers because of quality problems. A significant portion of the raw materials received did not conform to our standards, resulting in cymbals we had to destroy after our final quality control inspection. We had no choice but to wind up the relationship.

We will continue to offer the Twenty series, we will not discontinue it, and we will ensure that our customary quality and consistency applies. That’s the bottom line.

Any questions or comments are welcome to my attention at produktionsleiter@paiste.com.

My deep appreciation to all our fans and supporters for allowing us to continue to make great cymbals.

Hey Ron,

Thanks for for the info on the Twenty series.

Interesting comment on the Signature Traditional series. I have only a 20" medium Traditional ride, and not a lot of exposure to any other Traditional pieces, but to me it sounds brighter than old K's and, even a bit 'glassy'.

I am hopimg to see what else there is available in the Tewnty/prototype rides under the GC/Paiste deal at a different location near me, tomorow.

I agree with your assessment of Paiste, within the framework of the cymbals I have bought from them (602 and 2002). It may take ten cymbals, but you will find the same one without undue effort. I have never tried the Traditionals; didn't exist when I was buying Paiste.

I haven't bought a Paiste in a long time; Bosphorus and Istanbul have been closer to what I'm looking for, particularly as the 602 series disappeared.

I think the rule of thumb with Trads is: The thinner, the darker.
I have a 20" med. light ride @ 2,126 g. and 20" light ride @ 1,930g.
The light is low pitched with a soft, 'buttery' stick attack and a subtle, spreading undertone and dark crash, without being 'trashy'. It's not 'glassy'.
I have 3 different Bosphorus 20" rides; Hammer, Masters and Stanton Moore. Each have a unique
character, with some of the best qualities of an old, thin A, as well as a K vibe. I love them all,
But the Paiste Trad. light is very special. I believe it's not B20, but don't know what, exactly.

The last Paiste setup I tried a few years back were the Signatures. I didn't like them.
Somehow about a year ago experimenting again I ended up with a Vintage series 16 crash. That was a great sounding cymbal.
I don't follow paiste stuff, got lost after using 2002's for years but when I eventually put that cymbal on the bay it was a feeding frenzy. I got more than I paid for it.
