From the late 50s until at least the late 60s, Miles had his drummers playing Miles' own Gretsch black nitron set.
Not for those reasons... unknown to me at the time ... but to satisfy my own taste, in 1959 my first serious set was a Gretsch 'Progressive Jazz' in black nitron. If wood finishes had been available then, or known to me, I might have opted for maple or walnut, but, "Basic Black" is classy... you can wear it anywhere.
Still subscribe to that notion.
