How many of you guys use a bass drum patch?!?

Do You think it effects the sound of the head, or not?!?

I do on my gigging kits, simply because it extends the life of the batter head. I do think it affects the sound a little, makes it somewhat clicky until it wears in, unless you use a heavy felt beater on your pedal.

my 2cents, hope all is well over there!

I only use the Evans EQ pads. Going on years now. They all dampen the head, similar to moongel, but these are the only one's I have found that minimize that effect. They are smaller in size and pretty thin, reducing the dampening.

I do have plans for some experimenting coming up with open sounding bass drums and bigger rounder softer beaters which will include no patch.

I'm with Kelly... I only use the Evans ones. They are made out of something similiar to thin cloth and they don't affect the attack of the beater like a lot of the other brands. A lot of the other ones seem to be made of a plastic like a thick drum head, and they make the beater sound like "clack" instead of "doom" to me. I guess the metal guys like that sound.

I like the EVANS patches too - but that stuff is unavailable here... :(

So, I guess I'll try the REMO, unless I can find a similar material, and make a patch myself...

I asked about this because I used patches before, but then I changed the heads on my 18" Gretsch Catalina bd.
I put a Coated Emperor as Reso, and a Coated PS3 as batter... The sound is phenomenal, but after 3 gigs, the damage on the bass pedal beAter (which is a Pearl Quadbatter - the fat side) is evident. I need to stop this process somehow. I hadn't had this problem in the last 3 years, with the EVANS patch nad the regular head I had.

Right on Dave. Some patches are unbelievably ridiculous. Like "why even have a bass drum ridiculous". It's like sticking a drum on your head.

Goki just find the thinnest smallest felt type you can find.

Evans has two different EQ series patches - EQ Plastic (white) and EQ Nylon (black), as well as an AF Series which is made of Kevlar.

I use the EQ Nylon patch on kick heads. Evans claims that they soften the attack slightly; they must use better measurement equipment than my ears. I don't percieve any difference in sound with this patch.

It does seem to add some additional strength to the impacted area, but I don't often play at volume levels likely to indent the kick head.

At other times I have used the kevlar AF patch, and they do add significant dent resistance, along with a noticeably increased level of 'tick' to the attack. Not something I would use for anything but heavier attack playing.

Tim / Kelly,

Are you using the plastic (white) or nylon (black)?

I've never used one, other than the Evans patch that comes with the head that I tore off after playing for a couple of minutes. However, given the wear on my felt beater after using it on a coated head, I can see the problem. Hadn't used coated bass batter heads until I got the Gretsch.

The Remo Falam patches are considerably thicker than Evans, and choke the head.
The Aquarian thin patch is good, kinda big in area, but you can cut them down.
