I will soon be in the possesion of a "Swiss Cheese" vented snare like these ones from Spaun: http://www.spaundrums.com/snares_edgevent.htm

Just wondered if anyone had any experience at all with vented snares of any kind?

Hey David,

I have no experience with them.

What is your expectation / reasoning? I there something you are looking for that you think this might do, or sheer curiosity?

I think I had one in the 80's. It was a meaningless experience. Of course, maybe it was just a poor drum, but whatever I was hoping from it I sure didn't get.

Wow. Wonder what they sound like. You don't see many 14 x 7 anything anymore. My size.

Looks very interesting. I think it will probably have an acrylic sound (because of the shell combination)...

Congratulations on the purchase - reminds me of a "Tom and Jerry on Mars" cartoon - and I'm very happy about that... :D :D :D

It's coming included with a kit that I bought used. I got them for a good price so if it's an experiment gone very wrong I'll just try to sell it. I guess the idea is that the inner shell is "free floating" of any lugs and therefore freer to vibrate?

I've always been a sucker for cool sparkle finishes so I have to admit it looks kinda cool (antique white underneath red)!

Wow, never saw anything like that! That's more than just a vented snare, which in my vernacular is a drum with a portion of the shell cut out, period.

We have had several Spaun snares thru the shop.
They experiment quite a bit with venting and such, but most of them (IMHO) have a similar characteristic that I can only conclude to be their snare beds.
They are broad and roll over almost perfectly flat with maximum head contact. Rest of the edges are equal 45's with the point being central to the edge.
The result is difficult to describe, it is kinda harsh and bitey, yet full and broad at soft volumes, unique, and possibly worth hanging onto

Cheers
