Is this a 9-ply beechwood shell? I'm not familiar with this older Sonor badge:

Oak veneered Phonic. Late '70s, I think.

Whoops, thought the badge was black. It's '80s or early '90 Phonic.

Yes, Phonics were nine-ply Beech. As Greg already stated, the veneer is Oak. As Goki observed, a victim of target practice, or termites, or too many bar brawls, or transport sans cases, or..... 8-)
