I need to buy a second throne, mostly for short gigs but on occasion up to an hour. Light use (generally once a week). Space is a major issue, and the long nose of my Sonor tractor saddle (I've been using it and want to leave it at home) gets in the way; probably a cylindrical saddle is in order. Light is better than heavy, but I don't want it breaking if I lean the wrong way. I like nice hardware, but cost is an issue.

Suggestions?

Hi Gregory,
I really like the Pierce ergonomic throne. They are based in Tennesee not far from Kelly. I've been meaning to call them to see if they're still doing business. I've got the pneumatic version as well as one with threaded height adjustment.
If money is an issue, I'd probably stick with what I have. Going cheap on a throne is not an option for me.

On the other hand, maybe I'm just full of it, because here are some VERY inexpensive options:

Whatever seat You buy Gregory, in the long run, go for the threaded adjustment.
On the first link, the Ludwig throne has an adjustment that's regulated with a nut, and that tends to break and damage in a year. I honestly advise You to forget about that.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I keep looking at features and cost, and in my usual way manage to run the price up, which is what I'm trying not to do.

I bought a $25 dollar throne for a kid who was putting his butt on a chair, and I remember thinking it would last me about a year. I think the company was Universal or A-One.

It was a toss up between Gibraltar and the Ludwig that Brian listed above. Didn't know how to gauge the difference in clamping mechanism, and surely can tell nothing about the metallurgic grit of either, or the foam, or the vinyl, or.... The Lud was $20 less expensive and I went that way.

I almost didn't buy it because Ludwig must charge a premium for their name, such as it is. :|

First Ludwig anything I ever owned, and I'm sure it's Chinese. :cry:

Wow. I just discovered, once again, how little I know. GOOGLED Kaman... :shock: :shock: :shock: I still don't know what, who, or where Kaman is, but I see what lives under its umbrella.

I have been using the Gibraltar with a motorcycle style seat with suede top and the backrest. Actually, I have two of them. One is in my studio set and the other is at the electronic practice drums and also used for gigs. I like them very much although I don't lean against the backrest when I play. It does feel good to rest against it between songs though.

I also have a TAMA First Chair with a saddle seat and backrest. It is very good but the Gibraltar fits me better. The Gibraltar is on the heavier side but I think most of the stands in this range are heavier. The backrest is like a handle which makes it easier to carry.
