I'm torn between the G 14 and G2 drumheads on my next tom head change. Both are 14 mil, one single, one double ply. I wonder if there is going to be a big difference in sound between the 2 of them, considering they're both 14 mil. Your thoughts?

Don't know, but I would guess that a double ply head will dampen more and decay more quickly than a single ply head, because it is designed to confuse itself, whereas the single ply acts as a singular entity, regardless its thickness.

Greg, if I were you I would buy 2 of each. My two most used toms, 10 and 12.
One tom won't tell you much.
It's work and a little money but if I really want to go with one for a while there will only be two heads left to go into the "head pile". About 20 bucks.
Finish the kit in the one you like.

Great tip Kelly, I think I'll try that.

I'm not familiar with the G14, but I did try a coated G+ (12mil) on a popcorn snare that used to sport the coated G1 batter. It was a touch thicker sounding, more dampened on the high frequency harmonics and slightly more controlled for ring. Just what I was looking for. I'm sure the G14 continues on that tonal trend.
Other things I have heard about the G14 vs G2 is that the G14 has a little more attack in the midrange frequencies.

I just ordered the G 14 clears for toms, and a coated for the snare. Audio soundbyte will be posted after I receive the heads and get them tuned.
Thanks for your input.
