Here it starts

We really are strange animals us humans but at the end of the day we are just that......animals. It really saddens me how we treat each other, manipulate and destroy.

I wish I had more in depth words to add.....

This world is on a steady decline and I'm not sure there is enough good left (or intelligence) to stop it... :(

When you say we are just animals, there is an implication that there are options. Something greater or less than an animal, perhaps, or an order of beings that we're not familiar with?

As I usually understand the sentiment, it suggests that humans are on the same order as the rest of living creation. But it seems to me that we can clearly see differences between us and, say, muskrats. And surely one of the differences between us and the rest of the animals is that we are capable wanting to create mayhem, a thing no other animal that I'm aware of does just for the sake of it.

To put that in metaphysical terms, we have the capacity for evil, and we also have capacity for enormous good, as evidenced by love, gentleness, self-sacrifice. That evil and good become conflated (some idiot blows up children for his god) does not diminish the realities of good and evil, but only suggests the ease with which human beings can rationalize evil.

Is it possible that we are something rather more than 'just' animals, something both worse and better?
