As far as I can remember, I never tuned my first kit. Don't think I changed a head, either. It's hard to believe because I had that kit for almost ten years, but I don't remember addressing it, except for the day I dug the key out to convert the old snare into a low tom. It was my kit and that was its sound, and that's what I played.
Imagine my pleasure when I bought a new kit! I don't remember tuning it, either. I didn't play it all that much once the newness wore off; indeed it spent many years wrapped in green garbage bags stacked in a closet. I had talent; everyone said so.
I didn't begin to tune drums until I met a guitar player who thought about sound, and thought about it a lot. His passion must have rubbed off. As I began gigging, I discovered the joy of an in-tune snare, on one that went out of tune every second song. I played with the key close at hand.
And then I bought Sonor, and there was suddenly good reason to tune the entire kit. I still don't like tuning, but now I know Cliff (the bastid'), and there's no place left to hide.
