What part? The cult, the music, clothes, hair? Was there anything else? |

Yes, I am. Huge fan of the White Album, Abbey Road and Help in particular, but other stuff also. No so much the really early poppy stuff. It's the brilliant songwriting that still affects me mostly, not the drumming, though I do dig Ringo's playing most of the time. - D. |

I think you are about my age maybe even younger David? I am asking the Beatles question because I am about to venture into Ludwig. But first off, my Mapex Saturn experience. They are remarkable drums. I love drums with their own personality; Something that is there outside of myself. Why I love Premier Signia's and SClass Pros. Saturns are really great sounding drums. I really liked them. No complaints with finish, hardware, etc Musical drums. It would be difficult to make one of the drums sound bad. Some of the best sounding floor toms I have ever heard. Having said that, I have sold my Saturn kit. I ordered two drums for my kit, 5 month wait... When I got them they were the wrong color. So I was told of course, play those until we make you 2 new ones. One of them was a 8x8. Not one of their standard sizes. The standard of course is what everyone else is doing and what is the "In" thing right now, 8x7, 10x8, 12x9 etc I have attempted it many times and I always end up feeling like something is coming up short. Pun intended. I will not apologize for it and maybe I'm just out of date, but the little bit deeper toms sound much better to these ears, in practice, in clubs, live etc. Recording...who cares. So I asked Mapex if they would make me a 10x9, 12x10. You would have thought I asked for a flight to the moon. They stated "we cannot make those sizes anymore, we don't have the materials" Huh?? What material? They make a 13x10....kick drums fifty feet long...can't add an inch to a drum? I really wanted these drums and was very disappointed. So I ended up telling them that I didn't want to wait another 5 months, plus not get the sizes I wanted. So I returned the ones they sent and sold the kit. The kit sold in an hour. I was shocked. Ludwig. The word has not entered my mind for what, 30 years? Ludwig is the only big maker right now that will still make you the deeper toms. So I have a small Maple Classic kit coming. When I get the extra money I will order a couple other drums. Maple Classic's are the 7 Ply drums. Maple Legacy's are the old school 3 ply drums. So I have an 8x8, 10x9, 14x14ft and 20x18 kick coming. Natural Satin finish. I almost took Black Sparkle because it was so dam good looking but for another 200 for the whole kit I figured don't get a wrap. They have some nice veneers for a couple hundred more than that, including Bubinga, but I cannot like a horizontal grained veneer. It just bugs my eyes. So, Beatles... I missed the whole beatle thing. I always wrote it off as a "you had to be there thing". I was okay with them but never a big fan, have not bought any of their music. I do understand the phenomenon of "different" when it happens so I can understand popularity even when it's not popular to me. I'm not a hater, just not a lover. So getting into this Ludwig thing I am discovering searching forums and people that is everything Ludwig, that they are REALLY old school. Mostly vintage Ludwig. Hardly anything on Ludwig right now. And always, every other post will mention Ringo. A few will mention Bonham, but Bonham is Led Zeppelin and the interest is always minimum. Can find no good sound bites before I bought the kit for all the same reasons. The Ludwig kits, old and new, are all the giant size drums....13 up front, 26" kicks, 18 floor toms. And they are all the shallow sized kits. I did learn that Ringo's first kit was a Premier. I would just have to believe this as there is no way I care enough to research it or anything Ringo for that matter. I remember reading recently (yes recently, get the point?) that when McCartney (?) was asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world, he replied "He's not even the best drummer in the beatles" Is that true? Funny even if it isn't. |

Totally with you on the Power Toms, Kel, and the Beatles for that matter. I appreciate that they were apparent 'pioneers' of some sort, but not my thing. quote="Kelly"] I remember reading recently (yes recently, get the point?) that when McCartney (?) was asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world, he replied "He's not even the best drummer in the beatles" Is that true? Funny even if it isn't.[/quote] I've heard/seen that statement on film, and it was actually John Lennon, who was referring to Paul McCartney as the better drummer. Apparently Paul actually played parts on some recordings. Don't know which, and I have no proof, just what I've heard. |

Ludwigs are awesome. As are the Beatles. I could talk about both for a long time. I hope you dig your new kit. They are killer drums. I bought a kit of 4 ply super classics in trad depth(20, 10, 12, 14) when I was 18 for my first pro gig and they sound just as good as the day I got them. They have some good road scars on them, have a hanging floor tom which someday I will get some legs for, and awful mounting hardware that I converted to RIMS years ago. But they sound awesome and not stupidly expensive like some other brands. Enjoy! |

Oh thank God for you. First one I ever met that didn't try and convince me how brilliant they were. I never got it, still don't get it and really don't want it explained to me again. I just came later...music was much heavier when I entered. Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and it just got better from there. After hearing these sorts of bands, the Beatles sounded really thin. And I grew up on oldies, which I still like. Jeff, any experience with these Ludwig Classic Maples? All I know so far is they are great looking, my sizes, and Made in America. The wait is 3-4 weeks for an entire kit. What a f'n relief. Oh....you can order a 6 x 8 tom. Geez Might do it just because I can. I'll sit it on my desk |

An essay from Kel! I'm not a particular fan of the Beatles, but I did steal Revolver from my cousin when I was 15 or so. So I associate the Beatles with shame. |
