Post subject: | MERRY CHRISTMAS! |
Every year, at about this time, I'm in emergency mode trying to get stuff off to family living elsewhere, making out Christmas cards (a duty on par, in a way, with death and taxes), and still trying to find a present for my wife for whom not finding a present on time would be further evidence of the reliable disappointment that she occasionally suspects me to be. Today finally, I think, I've got Christmas under control – which is a hilarious thing to say about a birth that signaled the destruction of the old universe and the creation of the new one, more than two thousand years ago. But I want to take a moment, before the next tide of activity comes in tomorrow, to wish everyone here: Merry Christmas! I hope you all have family and friends (and some dogs) to share the day. Lily and I will be here after going to church at midnight the night before, and will make our usual very slow way toward a roast and some champagne in mid-afternoon. We'll raise a glass to our friends, and you will all be counted among them. Cheers! |

Finding a present on time only changes the odds; it does not assure the outcome. Thank you for the holiday wishes. Likewise, I wish a happy holiday season to all. |

[quote="cliff"] [color=#800000]Finding a present on time only changes the odds; it does not assure the outcome. I think that's correct. The equation, however, remains tippy. The best present in the world is not as good as a mediocre present on time. I think it acts as a place holder... like filing for an extension on your taxes. |
