If you could have played for anyone, ever....who would it be.

I thought I knew, I didn't.
After much soul searching, I would have wanted to play for Elvis.

What I would have said is not what I would now say. I like what I am currently playing, which is a mix of Elvis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, Valentinos, Gene Vincent, dot dot dot, played aggressively and dynamically, parsed to its bare bones because it's just me, a guitar, and a singer.

The drum chair at Fame and Muscle Shoals studios would have been a gas. Can you imagine?

Kelly, I know why Cliff would like to play for the Stones and Monk, but I'm interested to hear why you'd like to back Elvis.

Most of the music I am playing these days is Elvis, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly - because it all lends itself to a jazz-like approach but can still propel people out of their chairs - and it's just great music

Hound Dog is fascinating to play with a ding- a-ling jazz ride and syncopated snare and bass drum beats. So laid back and so powerful at the same time.

Cliff and I had an extended conversation about this. Elvis I mean.
I was always a fan, he's watchable, but never really listened to him, apart from the obvious radio stuff.
The truck I just got came with a free trial for satellite radio and the only thing I could find that I was remotely interested in was the Elvis channel.
I think I am discovering him honestly for the first time. In the past few weeks I have literally heard 100 songs that I have never heard before. I considered him a mediocre talent up until now. Some of the songs are really really good. He sounds better than the radio popular Elvis tunes.
He had a lot of fun with it and you could tell. Watching any live videos of him performing it was obvious he was really fun to play with.
Of course, there is a ton of personal and interesting things on the channel that you never knew to go along with it. Really interesting to know who he really was.

One of the last bands I was in did a few Elvis songs. They were so much fun to play. I had a blast playing them.

Yes, Kelly and I got to talk a bit about this.

The commercial Elvis tunes and persona never inspired me to look any further, and the movies more than sealed the deal. I have always found it hard to see him as a musician rather than as a product.

Kelly's exposure to stuff I have probably never heard may be an entire aspect of him that bears exploration. I wish Kelly had open this box while I also had free satellite radio. I loved satellite at first, but came to feel that it was overvalued in terms of (i) election that appealed to me, and (ii) repetition.

Too bad, as I suspect that is where the best exposure opportunity exists.

Well, his movies were absolutely the worst. Not the movies so much - I have no idea what they contained - but his acting was non-existant. Subsequent to being so elastic on stage behind a microphone, one wonders how he perceived the experience of being a block of wood in front of the camera.

All I know about Elvis, aside from weird suits and odd cars and curious views on feminine underthings, is the music from the late 50s, like That's Alright Mama, Baby Let's Play House, Hound Dog - all three of which we play as a band - , Jailhouse Rock, Blue Suede Shoes, etc. I won't go near songs like "In the Ghetto" and "Viva Las Vegas." I've enclosed those two in quotes and not the others for no particular reason other than that I'm too lazy to go back to correct.
