12hrs+ a day of practice for 25yrs+.
Virgil was a legend here in Melbourne for his playing, and the talk of the industry for his 'Social Retardation'. Story has it, he would turn up at the studios in Moorabbin (inner Melbourne suburb) before anyone else was there, pre 9am, with a packed lunch, and he would be one of the last to leave, between 10-12, EVERYDAY. 12hrs+ a day of being locked in a little room by yourself :| ,Discipline/Crazy, who knows  . Unbelievable talent, Finesse,Power,Groove,Placement.
I remember the first time I heard/saw Virgil, it was a video of him playing with a Van Halen tribute band called 'Hans Valen' when I was 14yrs old. Unbelievable, that was 23yrs ago. I have never heard Van Halen played so well, Van Halen themselves didn't come close  .

There is no other drummer that gets my attention like he does. Ever since I got his "Power drumming" disc. It's really mind blowing. It's supposed to be a practice lesson, things to practice. His discipline is incredible. His rudiments are a sight to behold. He has no weak area. All four limbs are equally trained to an amazing degree.

I had a guitar player like that once in my younger day. Complete freak of nature and complete social misfit. I don't think the guy even dated until his mid 20's. He just wanted to play his guitar. I always envied those kind of folks. I was more like "lets see....go play my drums or....go play with the girls?". My drums never won.
This guy later would sit in his apartment with his guitar, after he completely exhausted every rudiment, too late to turn his amp up, he would play to the conversations he heard in the other apartments.
Was in a band with him for 8 years. I owe a lot of my perservance and any ability I have to him. You had to work to keep up with him.

Wait, practicing 12 hours a day isn't normal and makes you a social misfit?! :? :?

Whew.

Even more amazing is he does all that on clear emps. LOL

On the disc I have he is completely shredding a Sonor Signature double pedal. If you have ever used one you will understand the remarkability factor.

Endorser: Virgil, it's 2010 bro. Lets say we get you an up-to-date pedal, one not so clunky and heavy, what do you say"
Virgil (caveman grunt): No
Endorser: Can we do something with your hair then. Maybe wash it?
Virgil: hat

Virgil is fantastic - one of the few out there... I'm not a fan of hard music (metal etc.) but still...

By the way - while we're talking about drummers with hats:

Hysterical Goki. Normally I hate that kind of drumming....but how could you coming from a 9 year old.
Though I do think it would not have been nearly as impressive if that frigging kit didn't sound so good. That snare is the bomb.

I can and do. Well, not so much hate as can't listen for long. I watched in the usual wonder one has when confronted with a child prodigy, carefully weighing what part of my antipathy might be envy. Maybe he'll be able to make something of it one day, maybe not; but you can bet it'll be tough to get past the fast-monkey worship.

But he sure is wearing a hat!

Cole Marcus is an interesting kid. The interview with Bozzio is pretty interesting, too.
