Wow! That's a great photograph, Cliff. How'd they get the train upstairs?
Here's another in Washington, DC. Not a great photograph, but then the scene wasn't all that photogenic, with the GG1 having broken past the deadheads at the end of the tracks, entered the waiting room, and then fallen through the floor to the baggage room below. This was just days before the Inauguration in '53. Huge volumes of passenger traffic would be passing through the station, and so the cars were removed and the engine was left in the basement, and a false floor built over the top of it, that served until the Inauguration festivities were completed.
The series of incidents that led up to the accident requires a flow chart to follow, but this is how it ended. Incredibly, no one was killed.
